1"Soda" refers to carbonated water, e.g. club soda. "Soda pop" refers to sweetened carbonated water, and "pop" is a shortened version of "soda pop". Therefore, "pop" is a subset of "soda" and is more accurate when referring to sweetened carbonated beverages such as Pepsi and Coke.

1Cokes
1I call the item specifically by it's name (i.e., Pepsi, Coke, Sprite, Dr. Pepper, etc.)
1soft drinks, or just drinks -- I've been in NC for 12 years
1Where I grew up - it was officially called soda pop. But we usually shortened it to "pop" when we "said" it. Of course - living in New Jersey for the last 10 years has taught me that it "should" have been shortened to "soda". Now I just call it "soft drink" to keep people off my back.

1I call it soda, and so should eveyrbody else. I just have one question, why would anyone call it pop? Sure, sure, it's a shortened form of "soda pop", btu so is soda. Also, how is pop in anyway a descriptor that is relevant when referring to s carbonated beverage. I've heard claims that it is a remnant from the days when the tops would "pop" off the top of the bottle. If this is the case, it is completely archaic since soda no longer comes in glass bottles (except some root beer and during the occasional advertising blitz by a soda company to cash in off the nostalgia of the older generations). On a side note, i'd just like to agree with the woman from New Orleans in the article who said that pop sounds dorky...preach on sister.
1Drink Name
1Stonecypher
1I have always used the terms "Coke" or "Pepsi" for the cola products of those brands, and, I thought everyone else did, also. "Cola" is a generic term for any cola flavored soda pop. "Pop" is short for "soda-pop". Although it is the corect term for any flavor of carbonated beverage, it is somewhat antiquated, with the term "Pop" being most prevalent, followed by "soda." Calling any flavor of pop "Coke" is just plain stupid. At first I thought it somewhat surprising that Texans did such a stupid thing. Then I remembered that Bush is from Texas.
1Why would call it Coke? Coke is a brand name... not a general name for a soft drink or "pop"
1fountain drink
1I can't believe this! You people need to grow up! I'm guessing a lot of you are adults. It blows my mind how some of you argue about something as trivial as what to call sodapop. WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't care if someone says pop, soda, coke, whatever! And I don't have to, because I'll never work at McDonald's! No one has the right to discriminate against someone just because they don't say the "right" word. There are much more important things one can discriminate about, like how immature some people are. Give me a break.

1To the person "freaking out" about this "trivial" argument I am from Ohio..where it is Pop (generally). I moved to Up state NY, where it is soda. Now, you tell me to chill out when the entire state goes crazy over saying it the wrong way? Uh..not so much. I think this little survey is great. Just wait until you say what you think it is in the wrong part of the country..then you can ream us out for pondering this "trivial" question.

1It's pop, unless you're referring only to colas (Coke, Pepsi, etc.) then it's cola. Soda is only used when referring to a specific name (cream soda, orange soda, etc). People who say "coke" for everything bother me (Coke is a kind of pop, not a generic term).
1It's Soda. Pop is a verb and last I checked, you can't drink a verb.
1It's pop. It comes from "soda pop". Pop is the noun, soda is an adjective that describes pop. Things are properly referred to by the noun, not the adjective. You say "tissue" for facial tissue, not "facial". If you ask for a facial, in some places you're going to get popped in the nose. "Pop" is the noun. "Soda" is the adjective. "Pop" is the correct term. End of discussion.

1a carbonated soft drink, is a carbonated soft drink, you just hope you don't have to specify the carbonation. They are all soft drinks, a cola is a type, a soda is a type. pop is slang for any type of cola, sodapop can't exist its one or the other

1I say "pop" when I'm referring to it as a generic noun ("I need to go to the store, I'm running low on pop...") but when ordering it at a restaurant or in just about any other situation I either specify the brand name or I just say "drinks" ("what kinds of drinks do you serve?"). This works well because it doesn't even necessarily specify "pop" or "soda" itself, but can mean tea, lemonade, or many other non-pop/soda beverages.

1Pop is for drinking, soda is for baking. How did soda-drinkers get foreigners to say soda instead of pop? They are destroying our way of life! I will not stand idly by and watch our Pop culture fizzle away!
1"pseudo" pop, since we drink the diet, caffeine-free version, it doesn't seem "real" enough to be called "soda-pop". But... I grew up in Akron where I didn't even know there was a "soda" in front of the word Pop. It was always just pop.
1Growing up in Cincinnati, we called all carbonated beverages "a coke" and had to specify if we meant Dr. Pepper, Royal Crown, Seven-up or Orange Crush. They were all 'cokes'. Strange, I know.
